Getting in some creativity and inspiration at @velvet.and.linen.workshops before wedding season starts. I always use creative shoots to try new ideas I can incorporate into my weddings.

After dusting off my Canon 5D classic DSLR from 2005, I put a split diopter filter on it for some cool creative shots (I’m obsessed omg!). The screen on the camera broke so it was like the magic of getting my film back from the lab when I loaded them onto the computer.

I also hired the 28-70 F2 lens for my canon R5 and think that will be making its way into my kit bag for all of my digital work.

I also shot a bunch of 35mm & medium format analogue film. I’m planning on developing some of it myself, looking forward to getting back into the darkroom 📷🎞️✌🏻

A few film scans from Heather & Seth’s belter of a day at @wellingtonhouseonthesquare from earlier this month. Mix of #portra400 & #portra800 🎞️📷✨

The day was an absolute dream (even with the crazy windy weather!!) and I was obsessed with Heather’s dress, made from a vintage pattern by Seth’s mum Ruth and aunt Cheryl. Ruth also made their wedding cake and grew the tulips for the flowers in her garden! Mother in law goals!!

I can’t get over the beautiful interiors and rooms at Wellington house. Every corner was beautifully decorated and styled after the owners lovingly restored the building. The venue made the most perfect backdrop for their couple portraits with storm Kathleen’s winds ruining our original plans for a beach walk!

Seth and Heather really put the most beautiful and personal touches into their day. From Seth playing the piano during the drinks reception, to their parlour games for their guests.

9 months ago I went back to shooting film again. I had been shooting on the canon R5 mirrorless camera for 2 years and was starting to feel like I was taking too many images and losing track of the connection with my work. I still really love all of my digital images (you can’t beat the auto focus and low light capabilities of my mirrorless camera) but I’m preferring all of my film photos.

This is what I’ve learnt from working more with analogue film:

✨ The connection with my subject through the optical viewfinder is super important to me (the viewfinder on mirrorless cameras is also a screen!!)

✨ I can trust my judgement to capture a moment on a wedding day in 1 or 2 frames rather than taking 20 on my mirrorless camera.

✨ Shooting with intention rather than just taking lots of photos makes you grow faster as a photographer. WHY are you taking the images that you are and what is important to capture.

Going in to do selects on my digital photos and seeing 2500 photos to do selects on from a wedding rather than 7000 makes me sooo happy. I’m selecting from a much more curated collection and delivering 800 digital images alongside my film photos that really shine.

Even if you don’t ever plan on using film as a photographer, get yourself an older DSLR that doesn’t have a fancy auto focus or high frames per second rate. I’m planning on using my canon 5D classic from 2005 a lot more this year.

Authenticity and feeling makes for a better image than having the most expensive kit. What do you think?

The lovely Zara #onfilm 🎞️

A few weeks ago I went down to Newcastle to see my lovely friend @zara_brimacombe and we planned a photoshoot whilst I was there. I met Zara way back when we were about 18 or 19 when I first started photography and I photographed her and her friend Frankii!

I’ve kept aside one roll of portra 400 to develop myself as I’m keen to self develop more film this year. I’ve loved being back in the darkroom.

What a day to start off my wedding season!!! Congratulations Heather and Seth who had the most fun and laid back day on Saturday at @wellingtonhouseonthesquare

How is it 1st April already? This year has flown by so quickly, after a busy March of couple and family shoots, 2 bridal photoshoots and our own honeymoon… it’s time for my first wedding of the year this weekend.

Instead of posting an April Fool, I’m going to share a little bit of a insta reality of the rollercoaster of what it’s like being self employed and running a solo business.

I’ve been working in the wedding industry for 15 years now, full-time since 2015. I’ve always photographed a mix of larger weddings, intimate weddings and elopements. I was typically booked 12-18 months in advance with the odd last minute elopement booking. In January I would be almost fully booked for the year and 50% for the following year.

Then Covid absolutely shook up the types of weddings couples are having and when they are booking. People are definitely having more smaller weddings and booking them with less than 12 months to go. Have any other suppliers found the same? We planned our own wedding in less than 12 months!

When it got to the end of October last year and I was sitting with just 6 weddings in my calendar for this year. I was panicking being like “why doesn’t anyone want to book me anymore”. Feeling like I was failing because I wasn’t where I would normally be with bookings.

Then in December my calendar started to fill up. Since the start of 2024 I’ve booked in 20 weddings (both 2024 & 2025 dates, including a lot of larger weddings for 2024!!)with a few more zooms this week. It’s been my busiest start to the year for bookings EVER. I now have 25 awesome couples in my calendar this year with some space to squeeze in a few more.

I just wanted to say a massive thank you to everyone who has booked me and supported me! I still can’t believe that I get to do this for my job!!! I’ll take the self employment rollercoaster any day over going back to work a 9-5 ✨🎞️📷

MEXICO HONEYMOON VIBES

Thank you to the lovely @julietarabadanph for photographing Chris and I in Mexico and making us feel like absolute rockstars ✨ Can we go back please?

I’ll let you in on a secret, I used to absolutely hate being photographed. Since I started taking photos I’ve always felt it was important as a photographer to get myself in front of the camera so I can experience what it feels like for my couples and clients.

It’s taught me how to direct and communicate with people better when photographing.

I also do a lot of film and tv extras and small acting jobs (I’m in season 2 of outlander!!) which I love as I get to see how incredible film and TV directors work with actors. It has helped me to direct in a more cinematic way. Having a huge camera on runners and learning to forget it’s there when I’m being directed has helped me work with couples and people who hate being photographed.

If you hate being photographed I 1000% recommend booking an engagement or couples photoshoot.

I also absolutely recommend having photos taken when you travel. It’s so important to capture moments in life and we till forever treasure these.

I’ve loved getting back into photographing some creative work this year. Thank you to @wildernessbride for having me photograph your beautiful dresses. Vintage fashion and clothing have always been a huge inspiration to me. When Stephanie sent me the moodboard of Victorian inspired vibes I was in love.

It was a joy last week to photograph the lovely @jessica.may.edin again. I photographed her wedding a few years ago and she’s modelled for me before. She is such a natural in front of the camera and the most wonderful person.
