One of my focusses in 2015 was to word hard on improving my work and getting as much experience as possible. Most wedding photographers start out my second shooting but I jumped in at the deep end and started shooting on my own. It’s been great to be able to work alongside some amazing photographers and learn from them.
I was so excited to be able to second shoot for the amazing Caro Weiss last June. I have followed her work for quite a while and I’ve always loved her style of shooting and editing. When I seen the final gallery from the wedding I was struggling in places to pick out my photos from hers and I was blown away with how she had edited my images. It’s given me a bit of a push to work on my editing skills in Lightroom seeing the potential of my own work.
Rory and Catriona’s wedding was a relaxed and vintage influenced wedding in Udny Green in Aberdeenshire which was absolutely picture perfect. I am so in love with that region of Scotland. I started off photographing Rory at home in Aberdeen, having never met him before I chatted to him and whilst snapping away which he said helped to calm his nerves in the morning. I was joined by Caro for the drive to the gorgeous cottage where Catriona was getting ready for a mini first look before heading to the church to photograph the boys outside and guests arriving.
Having mostly photographed on my own I am usually with the bride in the morning whilst she puts on her dress with her bridesmaids and often her parents. Being a second shooter just made me reasise how full of emotion these moments are. I stood at the back of the church seeing Catriona in her dress for the first time, she looked at her dad and began to cry tears welling up in my own eyes from behind my camera. Its moments like these that remind me just why I do what I do.
Just after the ceremony the rain started to pour, but everyone was in high spirits on the short walk round the green to the village hall for the evening reception. I loved the colours and the vintage details with the bunting and flowers of the decor in the hall. I loved the sparklers on their cake which were lit just before the cake cut.
One thing I have noticed about Aberdeenshire wedding is everyone is always super friendly and really knows how to have a party. I was photographing the evening reception with a smile on my face amongst everyone on the dance floor. I honestly couldn’t have asked for a more lovely wedding party, Catriona, Rory and all the guests were all so welcoming even though I had never met them before.
It was also such a joy to photograph alongside Caro who was equally as lovely and incredibly talented. I hope to be able to work alongside her again. Such a perfect day for an amazing couple.
